The Norwegian painter, Peder Balke, visited Tromsø in 1832 while traveling in northern Norway.

The city of Tromsø, the capital of Northern Norway, was established in 1794. Xavier Marmier, as one of the members of the La Recherche Expedition, found it a charming town on his visit in 1838.

Tromsø has rich polar traditions. Hence, there was no coincidence that Nansen's reunion with his crew took place in Tromsø in 1896.
