Linnaeus's journey to Lapland

Saxifraga nivalis
"Saxifraga nivalis appears everywhere in our mountains where the melting snow slowly moistens the ground. I know of no other plant that is more resistant to the cold in our chilly Lapland. I have actually seen it grow and flower under the perpetual snow, which neither the sun nor rain can melt; this can be found by a hard edge of ice that is slightly raised from the ground."
