Alta, with its old center, Bossekop, is known since old times as a market place and cultural center of western Finnmark.

The Speculum Boreale by Hans H. Lilienskiold from late 17th century contains a picture of Talvik in Alta.

A. F. Skjöldebrand made this waterpainting of Bossekop on his North Cape Tour in 1799.

The La Recherche Expedition spent the 1838-39 winter in Alta, studying the northern lights.
