Rock in the reservation : songs from Leningrad Rock Club 1981-86

Steinholt, Yngvar Bordewich
On the seventh of March 1981 a rock club opened in Leningrad. This happened five years before Soviet cultural authorities were prepared to acknowledge that rock music existed in the USSR. According to official ideology, rock was a symptom of the moral and cultural decay of western capitalist societies, and therefore by definition unsuitable for Soviet audiences. Half a decade later, rock music broke out of its Leningrad reservation and onto public stages to become the soundtrack of perestroika. Rock tapes were distributed and recopied by the millions. The phenomenon received massive attention and generated fierce debates on home soil. Soon, western journalists and academics began arriving to study this curious phenomenon. By 1990, members of the rock community, regional cultural
authorities, and the KGB were all claiming the honour of being the initiators of the Rock Club.
This book is a revised and corrected version of Steinholts doctoral thesis from 2004.
Nordlandsbåtens form

Pedersen, Tore Bugge
Alice in Wonderland : development of Alice’s identity within adaptations

Johannessen, Finn-Henning
In this master thesis, I have analyzed the development of Alice’s identity in selected adaptations of Lewis Carroll’s (1832-1898) "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland" (1865) and compared them to the original book. I chose three adaptations, Tim Burton’s "Alice in Wonderland" (2010), the videogame inspired by this movie (2010), and the videogame "American McGee’s Alice" (2000). I have applied discourse theory, established by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, to explore how the discourses, which Alice encounters on her side of the border and in Wonderland, shape her identity. Language, discursive articulations in the form of exposition, and bodily experience are agents in shaping Alice’s discourses. I have applied border theory to understand how crossing over to and from Wonderland can be seen as entering a new set of discourses. I concluded that all of the adaptations, which I have analyzed, maintain several important elements and scenes, which are presented in the book and are important for Alice’s developing identity. Depending on the type of medium, the adaptations implement technological tools, which are used in presenting this major theme. The focus on Alice’s identity is maintained. However, the adaptations provide a modern perspective, compared to Carroll’s books, which are based on Victorian ideals
Women, letters and the empire : the role of the epistolary narrative in Alice Walker's The color purple

Jørgensen, Maria Berg
In the 1982 novel "The Color Purple", Alice Walker wrote the first African-American epistolary novel. It is narrated in letters written by a black woman who writes in her rural dialect rather than Standard English, and is widely acknowledged for giving a voice to a character who is silenced not only by her race and her class, but also by sexual violence. This thesis investigates the role of the letters in the novel, and finds that they not only serve to solidify the voice of an initially voiceless person, but that the main character's style of writing challenges the conventions of the epistolary novel. The thesis argues that "The Color Purple" is a post-colonial revision of the very form of the epistolary novel, in particular of Samuel Richardon's "Pamela" (1740). It discusses the form of the letters in "The Color Purple" in the light of studies on the traditional epistolary novel as well as post-colonial theory, and finds that Walker's unconventional use of the epistolary form mirrors the way the two letter-writers in the novel use the English language.

Would not bigger be better? : some reflections on aspects of the business models of Open Access publishing

Frantsvåg, Jan Erik
While Open Access publishing is beneficial to science, it is not beneficial to perform Open Access publishing in an inefficient way. I have here tried to study some aspects of how OA publishing works with a view to find out if it is organised efficiently. Both when it comes to uptake of advertising as a source of income, and how it is exploited; and when it comes to how the OA publishing industry is organised I find clear signs of inefficiency.; Selv om Open Access publisering er bra for vitenskapen er det ikke likegyldig hvorvidt dette gjøres på en effektiv måte eller ikke.
