Focus and Scope
Rangifer is the international scientific journal of the Nordic Council for Reindeer Husbandry Research (NOR) http://site.uit.no/rangifer/ (read more about the publisher here). The journal was first published in 1981, online publishing of normal, special and report issues started at volume 28, 2008. All back issues of Rangifer (normal edition, special issues and reports) are available open access online. Rangifer is the world’s only scientific journal dealing exclusively with husbandry, management and biology of arctic and northern ungulates and publishes original, unpublished papers, review articles and brief communications in all themes and fields related to the animal reindeer and reindeer husbandry as culture and industry, including papers on other northern ungulates. The establishment of the journal was motivated in developing a high quality forum for scientific publishing of the above mentioned subjects and to increase the accessibility of such research. The manuscripts are evaluated by at least two independent referees. The change to be an online journal does not alter the journal's demand for high quality publishing. Rangifer is registered in international databases for scientific papers, including Biosis, Biological Abstracts, CAB, Agris. Rangifer paper edition (Normal Issue ISSN 0333-256X) was published regularly from 1981 to 2007. Rangifer Special Issue ISSN 0801-6399 was issued for the first time in 1986. Nineteen special issues have been published so far.The last from the 12th North American Caribou Workshop, Happy Valley - Goose Bay, NL, Canada 2009 was issued in 2011.
The first Rangifer report ISSN 0808-2359 was published in 1995. The contents have mainly been abstracts and articles from NOR’s own workshops and conferences. The last issue No. 14-2010 contains abstracts and programme of the 16th Nordic Conference on Reindeer and Reindeer Husbandry Research held at the University of Tromsø, Norway, in November 2010.

Peer Review Process
All papers will be sent anonymously for review, and authors will be given the opportunity to revise and resubmit.
Alle innsendte bidrag vil bli gjort anonymt tilgjengelig for fagfellevurdering, og forfatterne får mulighet til å gjøre endringer og sende inn på nytt.
Publication Frequency
As from Vol. 28 (2008), normal issue of Rangifer is issued in one number per year and consecutive publishing of accepted material. Special issues, mainly conference proceedings and theses, are issued unregularly. Report issues, mainly of NOR’s own conferences, are issued unregularly.
Open Access Policy
There will not be any subscription possibilities as from Vol. 28. From now on, Rangifer will primarily be an online Journal (ISSN: 1890-6729). This change to be an online journal does not alter the journal's demand for high quality articles. In order to facilitate maximum dissemination of the research published in Rangifer, Rangifer has adopted a strong Open Access policy. To achieve this, Rangifer licenses all content of Rangifer under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) licence. cc-by This means, among other things, that anyone is free to copy and distribute the content, as long as they give proper credit to the author(s) and the journal. For further information, see Creative Commons website for human readable or lawyer readable versions.
Publisher
Nordic Council for Reindeer Husbandry Research (NOR),
* was founded in 1980 and has new regulations from 2003.
* membership includes Finland, Norway and Sweden.
* is economically sustained by the Ministries of Agriculture in the member countries.
NOR actively promotes contact between reindeer husbandry and the research community within the Nordic countries and between the Nordic researchers themselves. Through the journal Rangifer, NOR offers publishing possibilities for scientific results in all themes and fields related to the animal reindeer and reindeer husbandry as culture and industry, and through the web site http://site.uit.no/rangifer/ provides information from other sources concerning reindeer and reindeer husbandry from the Nordic countries involved. NOR also opens contacts to scientists elsewhere working on topics of relevance to reindeer husbandry. NOR’s work includes sciences of all themes and fields related to the animal reindeer and the reindeer husbandry as culture and industry.
NOR’s main strategies are:
* create meeting places for science and reindeer husbandry/industry,
* publish the scientific journal Rangifer and organise regular Nordic meetings,
* be information source about the reindeer industry in the Nordic area and also about the activities and work done by NOR,
* be information source for reindeer/reindeer husbandry projects, and obscure scientific literature,
* contribute to literature and information dissemination among the Nordic countries,
* improve research contacts to promote co-operative projects and facilitate financial support.
NOR has delegations from each of the member countries, which include Finland, Norway and Sweden. Delegates are appointed by their respective governments. Delegates are chosen to represent reindeer husbandry, management and research. The position of NOR Chairman is by two year period and rotates among member countries. For the two year period from 2011, Finland holds the chairmanship. The working committee includes the following delegates:
- Senior Researcher Mauri Nieminen, Finland, chair
- Professor emeritus Öje Danell, Sweden, vice chair
- Reindeer owner Inge E. Danielsen, Norway

Brief background and history
Background
Reindeer husbandry is an important livelihood and cultural base for many Sami in the northern parts of Fennoscandia, where as much as 35-45% of the land areas of Finland, Norway and Sweden are used by the reindeer husbandry industry. Reindeer numbers fluctuate over time due to natural and social reasons. Today there are about 690 000 domesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus). About 12 500 herders and reindeer owners are involved in the industry ((Dahle et al., 1999; Statistics Sweden, 1999; Filppa, 2005; Reindriftsforvaltningen, 2006). Additionally there are 2000 protected wild forest reindeer (R. t. fennicus) in southern Finland outside the reindeer herding districts (Bisi et al., 2003) and 30 000 wild tundra reindeer (R. t. tarandus) in South-Norway where normally more than 5000 animals are hunted yearly (Reimers, 2007).
The structure of the industry and its administration is different in the three countries. Despite this fact, much of the research on topics related to reindeer husbandry and domesticated and wild reindeer as well as reindeer dependant societies have a common relevance for the industry. On this basis Nordic Council for Reindeer Husbandry Research (NOR) was founded in 1980 (Sara, 1981; 1999) with member governments Finland, Norway and Sweden (previously also Greenland was a member of NOR).
History
NOR is a co-operative organisation for research in reindeer and reindeer husbandry, founded in 1980. The initiative was taken by the State Secretary Ole K. Sara, who was elected the first president of NOR. He was also the first director of the Norwegian Reindeer Husbandry Administration. The formation meeting was held in Uppsala, Sweden. The Norwegian veterinarian Sven Skjenneberg, Harstad, was appointed secretary-general and hence the secretariat was located in Norway. Member countries were and still are Finland, Norway and Sweden. For a period from 1988 to 2001 Greenland was also connected to NOR.
The first Nordic Conference on Reindeer Research was held in 1981, Hemavan, Sweden and the scientific journal Rangifer appeared in that same year; with complete editions in English from 1991. Sixteen Nordic conferences on reindeer and reindeer husbandry research have been arranged so far. NOR’s original mandate from 1981 was modified in 1989 and 1992 and 2003. The secretariat moved in 1994 to the city of Tromsø, which is northern Norway’s cultural and academic centre.
NOR’s logo
The logo was kindly permitted used by its originator the artist Terje Grøstad and has been NOR’s logo since 1981. It was originally designed for the International Reindeer/Caribou Symposium at Røros, Norway, in 1978.
