Abstract

Much of the discussion of Open Access in recent years has focused on the potential competitive advantage OA has over traditional journals in the domain of dissemination. In this talk, Rice asks whether there may be other domains in which competitive advantages may be found. For example, advocates of OA often argue that OA is "at least as good" as traditional journals when it comes to quality control. Rice argues that this undershoots the potential of the form and he argues that being "at least as good" as the others is not good enough. He raises several specific areas in which OA potentially provides the format for competitive dominance in the area of quality control.
